Duke University to Unveil Statue Honoring College Sensation Jayson Tatum
In a move that cements his legacy as one of the greatest players in program history, Duke University has announced plans to unveil a statue of NBA star and former Blue Devil standout Jayson Tatum outside the university’s famed Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The bronze statue, set to be placed at the entrance of the Schwartz-Butters Athletic Center, will serve as a lasting tribute to Tatum’s impact on Duke basketball—both during his standout freshman season and through his continued excellence at the highest level of the game.
Tatum played one season for Duke in 2016–2017 under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. Despite battling early-season injuries, he quickly became one of the most dominant forces in college basketball, averaging 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. His smooth offensive game, defensive versatility, and poise under pressure helped lead the Blue Devils to an ACC Championship and a deep NCAA Tournament run.
“Jayson was the kind of player every coach dreams of,” said Coach Krzyzewski in a statement. “He was talented, yes—but more importantly, he was coachable, humble, and fiercely competitive. This statue isn’t just about what he did in one season; it’s about the standard he set and the legacy he continues to build.”
Since being drafted third overall by the Boston Celtics in 2017, Tatum has become a perennial NBA All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, and the face of one of the league’s most storied franchises. Known for his silky scoring touch and elite footwork, Tatum has garnered praise not only for his on-court dominance but also for his leadership and philanthropy.
The statue, designed by award-winning sculptor Brian Hanlon, will depict Tatum in his signature jump shot motion—a nod to the pure shooting form that made him a college sensation and NBA star. The unveiling is scheduled for October 2025, just ahead of the Blue Devils’ home opener, and will coincide with a weekend of celebration, including a ceremony featuring former Duke players, coaches, and Tatum’s family.
“I’m beyond honored,” Tatum said in a video message. “Playing at Duke was one of the most important chapters of my life. It helped shape me into the player and person I am today. To have a statue on that campus, where so many greats have played—that’s truly humbling.”
The event is expected to draw thousands of fans and alumni to Durham, where Tatum’s statue will join the growing list of tributes to Duke basketball legends. It stands not only as a monument to past glory but also as inspiration for future generations of Blue Devils dreaming of greatness.
