University of Kentucky to Unveil Statue Honoring College Sensation Devin Booker
In a move that cements his legacy as one of the greatest players in program history, the University of Kentucky has announced plans to unveil a statue of NBA star and former Wildcat sensation Devin Booker outside the university’s iconic Rupp Arena.
The bronze statue, set to be placed at the entrance of the Joe Craft Center—Kentucky’s basketball training facility—marks a historic tribute to a player whose impact on the Wildcats extended far beyond the box scores.
Booker, who played for Kentucky during the 2014–2015 season, was a key member of the legendary 38–1 team that captivated college basketball fans nationwide. Known for his smooth shooting, calm demeanor, and clutch performances, Booker averaged 10 points per game as a freshman and was widely celebrated for his selfless play and maturity on a roster loaded with future NBA talent.
Though his college career lasted only one season, his legacy has endured for a decade. Since being drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 2015, Booker has become a perennial NBA All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, and one of the most dynamic scorers in professional basketball. His work off the court—through philanthropy, mentorship programs, and advocacy for education—has also elevated his standing as a role model and ambassador for the sport.
“Devin embodies everything it means to be a Wildcat,” said Kentucky head coach John Calipari in a press conference announcing the statue. “He was a team-first guy, a competitor, and someone who made those around him better. Now the world knows him as an NBA superstar, but to us, he’ll always be family.”
The statue, designed by renowned sculptor Julie Rotblatt-Amrany—who has previously created statues of Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal—will depict Booker mid-shot, with his signature shooting form frozen in bronze. The university plans to unveil the monument during a special ceremony ahead of the 2025–2026 basketball season, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Booker’s lone season in Lexington.
Fans and alumni are expected to travel from across the country for the event, which will include appearances by former teammates, current NBA players, and members of Booker’s family. A commemorative exhibition highlighting his college highlights and professional milestones will also be featured inside the Craft Center.
“It’s an unbelievable honor,” Booker said in a recorded message. “Kentucky is where my dreams started to feel real. To have a statue where it all began—it’s something I could’ve never imagined.”
As Booker’s likeness takes its place among the legends of Kentucky basketball, the statue will serve as a reminder of how greatness often begins with humility, hard work, and a single season that changed everything.
