Ex‑Tennessee Receiver Grant Frerking Served as Vols Consultant Amid Alleged Fraud
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Former University of Tennessee wide receiver Grant Frerking, who played for the Volunteers from 2017 to 2022, is at the center of controversy following reports that he served as a paid consultant for the football program while allegedly engaging in multiple financial scams.
Frerking, who was hired by UT Athletics as a consultant in 2023, received semiannual payments totaling approximately \$30,000 over two years. His role reportedly included advising head coach Josh Heupel on name, image, and likeness (NIL) matters, assisting with public relations, and maintaining a visible presence on campus.
However, a recent investigation by OutKick and other outlets uncovered that during this time, Frerking was allegedly involved in deceptive business practices through his former company, Metro Straw. Multiple individuals claimed they paid Frerking for landscaping materials and services that were never delivered. In some cases, customers received only partial refunds.
In addition to the alleged business scams, Frerking has faced multiple evictions in Nashville and owes thousands in unpaid rent. He is also under investigation by a Georgia police department for “theft by deception” after a customer accused him of accepting payment for unfulfilled lawn services.
The University of Tennessee has stated that Frerking’s contract will not be renewed after its June 30 expiration. On3, a sports media company where Frerking served as president of NIL University, also terminated his employment in May, citing undisclosed conflicts and misrepresentation of his consulting relationship with Tennessee.
No criminal charges have been filed as of now, but investigations are ongoing.
The situation raises broader questions about oversight and accountability in NIL-related roles and affiliations within college athletics.
