Palace’s FA Cup win over Manchester City last month earned them a spot in the Europa League. Their run-in with the regulations has come about because John Textor, whose Eagle Football Group owns 43 percent of the club, is also the owner of French side Lyon.

The French outfit qualified for the Europa League by finishing sixth in Ligue 1. No individual is permitted to have a significant say in the running of two clubs competing in the same UEFA competition.

Palace are reportedly confident no rules have been breached. They held a meeting with UEFA officials last week, but it could be later on this month before a decision is made.

It has now been reported by talkSPORT that Palace are “expected” to retain their place in the Europa League. Textor, it is claimed, is deemed not to have a “decisive influence” in the club.

It is said UEFA “don’t construe Textor as holding a controlling influence” at Selhurst Park. Moreover, according to talkSPORT, UEFA “recognise the value” of having the Eagles in next term’s Europa League and are “in favour” of keeping them in the competition.

Forest are understood to have written to UEFA asking for clarity after expressing concerns over Palace’s Europa League spot. At one stage last season, it looked as though the Reds and fellow Evangelos Marinakis-owned side Olympiacos might both qualify for the Champions League. To avoid potentially being in the situation Palace are in, Marinakis placed his Forest shares in a blind trust so as not to fall foul of the regulations.

The Press Association have reported Textor is willing to sell his shares in Palace in order to ensure they can compete in the Europa League. The American businessman has previously spoken of his frustration at how little influence his stake entitles him to over football matters.

Pundit and former Palace chairman Simon Jordan recently discussed Forest’s decision to write to UEFA. He said on talkSPORT: “I’m trying to work out if I were Nottingham Forest, would I feel a necessity to put my two penneth in when UEFA have already made their position clear that Crystal Palace need to find a solution to the problem?

“Crystal Palace and Lyon need to find a solution to the potential problem they’ve got, and I don’t think it needs Nottingham Forest to put their two penneth in. But Marinakis being Marinakis, he will suggest that actually he (Forest) had the foresight to avoid the same problem.”
