The club’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman and the Sunderland hierarchy have taken steps to ensure Rigg doesn’t follow Jobe Bellingham through the exit door.

The Black Cats have plenty of business to do over the summer, both in terms of incomings and outgoings. And Sunderland have made their stance known in regards to Rigg.

According to TEAMTalk, the club have attached a huge £35m price tag on one of their prize assets.

This comes after reported interest from nine clubs, including seven from the Premier League – West Ham, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton, Crystal Palace and Brighton.

Bundesliga duo RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be coveting the youngster. Leverkusen can offer Champions League football to Rigg, while Leipzig are one of the best clubs in the world at developing young talent.

But Rigg has already been advised he is best to stay put at such a young age and to stay put to continue his development.

Sunderland appear to be the perfect club for Rigg to do just that and regular first-team football aged 17 is not a given elsewhere. Overall, Rigg seems to be in a good place on Wearside and is only going to get better as a player.

Rigg signed his first professional deal with Sunderland last summer with the deal set to run out in the summer of 2027.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are looking to recruit host families who can provide a home away from home to the club’s young players, aged 15 to 21.

A host family would care for players from outside the area by providing a homely, safe and comfortable environment throughout the season. The role is about more than providing a room. It will have an impact on the players’ lives, their life skills and development and by working with the club, support the player on their journey into professional football.

A club statement said: “Players would reside with host families for approximately 44 weeks of the year, up to seven days a week, and host families would be expected to provide high-quality meals in line with the club’s nutritional guidelines and to any cultural requirements, around the player’s flexible schedule.

“Players would require their own bedroom and homes, with access to transport links to the Academy of Light is desirable.

“This is a very rewarding role, and in return, Host families will be paid a competitive fee. If you think that you could offer a young player a home, please express your interest by contacting the club.”
