Newcastle United set to release official striker statement after talks
Newcastle United are set to make an announcement regarding the future of Callum Wilson.
Wilson’s contract at St James’ Park officially expires today (June 30). The Magpies confirmed earlier this month that discussions were ongoing and that a new deal could still be agreed.
Newcastle United due to release Callum Wilson statement
Newcastle are due to confirm whether Wilson is staying or going, with the latter understood to be the most likely outcome.
Wilson appeared to bid farewell to supporters after the final game of last season against Everton but head coach Eddie Howe didn’t rule out the striker staying.
“Well, let’s wait and see,” Howe told NewcastleWorld. “We’re going to sit down and talk with his representatives. What I can say is Callum Wilson is and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle, someone who epitomises the spirit that’s got us to where we are.
“Really professional, brave. To come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment that he did in the club’s history, it was a difficult moment. The club needed hope and Callum gave them hope. He led the line with that responsibility and the pressure that that role brings unbelievably well. He brings a positivity to the group.
“He’s a leader within the changing room. He’s just been incredible and let’s wait and see what happens. It was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There’s still so much respect there between the two.”
Howe added: “Obviously I’ve got a very close relationship with him, as I’d like to think I have with, I won’t say all, because that’s impossible, but the majority of the players in the squad, I think it’s really important that I do.
“But he’s someone I just respect immensely. I’ve seen the struggles that he’s had in his career. I’ve also seen the successes. I’ve seen the development. He’s never someone you’d want to lose from the group.
“But obviously, there’s challenges that we face as a football club. Financial challenges with PSR, with a whole host of different decisions to make. And that’s why I said, let’s wait and see what happens.”
Newcastle United release £15m defender
Newcastle have also remained in talks with John Ruddy, who has acted as third or fourth choice goalkeeper after joining as a free agent last summer.
Meanwhile, today marks the end of Jamal Lewis’ contract. The Northern Ireland international first moved to St James’ Park from Norwich City for £15m in the summer 2020 and went on to make 36 appearances.
The left-back spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Championship side Watford before joining Brazilian giants Sao Paulo on loan in September. However, he returned to Tyneside in January after requiring surgery on his ankle.
