QPR must beat Portsmouth and Birmingham City to ‘exquisite’ transfer for new manager – opinion.

Reading have already seen one player make the move to QPR but the R’s should be courting another one.
QPR have already agreed a deal to snap up Reading defender Amadou Mbengue this summer and should look at conducting more transfer business with the League One outfit to help Julien Stephan next season.

The former Rennes boss has taken over from Marti Cifuentes and QPR preparation for the upcoming campaign has now begun in earnest. Jimmy Dunne has signed a new deal at Loftus Road and Kwame Poku has come through the door, alongside Mbengue.

The Reading defender will sign for QPR as a free agent, meaning no transfer earning for the Berkshire club. However, QPR should be staying in contract with the Royals over a potential move for midfielder Charlie Savage.

QPR should look at signing second Reading player
Football Insider has named Wrexham, Birmingham City, Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers all as potential suitors for the 22-year-old, who is labelled as ‘one of the most exciting young players in the EFL’. The son of Robbie Savage, the former Manchester United man impressed last term with consistent showings in the centre of the park.

Reading are said to value the player at £2 million, which could prove a shrewd investment given his potential. Savage played in 45 of 46 League One fixtures last term and racked up 50 appearances across all competitions.

In one of his best showings, coming in a 0-0 draw against Stevenage earlier this year, the Reading Chronicle outlined what makes the player so effective with an 8/10 player rating. The outlet said: “Best player on the pitch. Energy throughout, big tackles and an exquisite range of passing. Up there with his best performances since arriving.”

Charlie Savage could excel in Julien Stephan formation
That energy, passing and defensive knowhow would be perfect for Stephan to work with at QPR. As outlined by Football League World, the new manager prefers a 4-1-4-1 formation where the holding midfield is a linchpin for the side.

That position could become the most important on the pitch for QPR. Jonathan Varane looks the most likely to fulfil that role and has the credentials to do it well, but the R’s cannot rely on just one player. Varane did have to manage a minor injury concern at points last season and QPR have had to fend off bids for the 23-year-old this summer.

Signing Savage this summer would help take some pressure of Varane staying fit, while also building a future successor should the R’s choose to cash in on the Frenchman in the future.
