Portsmouth have perfect chance to re-sign local midfielder after transfer announcement
Portsmouth need an excellent summer transfer window if they are to build on the 2024/25 season.
After Pompey finished 16th in the Championship, there is an expectation that the South Coast club can now look to push further up the division.
However, it is likely that the 2025/26 campaign will be even harder as Birmingham City and Wrexham come into the second tier with ambitions of promotion to the Premier League.
Therefore, John Mousinho needs to oversee a fantastic summer if Portsmouth are to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle once again.
Now, Pompey have been presented with a perfect chance to sign former academy star John Swift ahead of the transfer window.
Portsmouth have to sign John Swift after he was released by West Brom
A new midfielder is a must at Portsmouth in the summer transfer window.
Pompey have lost multiple players already, including loanee Freddie Pots, who has returned to West Ham.
However, a perfect replacement for the 21-year-old has emerged, who is currently available on a free transfer.
According to West Brom (20 May), the Championship outfit are set to release numerous players, including Swift.
The midfielder has been a regular in the second tier for nearly a decade after his emergence at Reading.
Now, after three years at the Baggies, he is being allowed to leave when his contract expires this summer.
The midfielder would be the perfect signing for Portsmouth. Not only was he originally in Pompey’s academy set-up before he was poached by Chelsea, but he is also a local, being born and bred in Portsmouth.
The 29-year-old’s experience in the second-tier, combined with his affinities for the South Coast club, would make him a bargain for Mousinho.
Swift could become the next Josh Murphy at Portsmouth
While Josh Murphy plays in a completely different position to Swift, the midfielder could easily replicate the winger’s rise.
Murphy arrived on a free at Portsmouth last summer and completely revolutionised the team and is easily Pompey’s best player.
The signing of Swift could easily be similar, with the 29-year-old possessing numerous qualities that can be used to Mousinho’s advantage.
Hopefully, Portsmouth will seriously consider signing the midfielder this summer as they aim to build on their recent success.
Portsmouth hero could be next Sheffield Wednesday manager amid Rohl exit latest
Portsmouth’s Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday are facing a hugely troubling period behind the scenes.
The Owls are once again finding themselves hugely frustrated with their owner Dejphon Chansiri over his mismanagement of the club.
The South Yorkshire outfit flirted with the Championship play-offs at times last season, but there is a genuine possibility they could find themselves in a relegation battle last term, after they were recently placed under a transfer embargo for the next three windows.
Danny Rohl’s future at the club has been up in the air for several months, but it now seems as though it could be coming to a head imminently.
Gary O’Neil is in the running to be the next Wednesday boss
Pompey have been dealt scares in recent weeks by the fact that John Mousinho has been linked with several other Championship jobs.
With Rohl continually tipped to leave Wednesday over the last few months, many would have expected Mousinho to have been touted as a potential candidate to replace the young German, but thankfully for the Fratton Park faithful, that doesn’t appear to be the case at the moment.
Instead, former Pompey hero Gary O’Neil is thought to be one of the leading candidates to take over if Rohl does leave ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The 42-year-old is currently the third-favourite, and has odds of 8/1 to potentially take over at Hillsborough, according to Oddschecker (29 June).
The only two men with shorter odds than O’Neil at present are Rohl’s assistant Henrik Pedersen, and former Swansea chief Luke Williams.
