Wrexham flop who Phil Parkinson signed in 2024 seals emotional return to former club on a free transfer…

Wrexham have already said goodbye to one club legend this summer, as their rapid rise up the Football League continues to throw people out of favour.

This summer, Paul Mullin has joined Wigan Athletic on loan, leaving Wrexham on a temporary basis, but leaving his future with the Dragons highly uncertain.

Whether or not we see the 30-year-old play for Wrexham again remains to be seen, if not unlikely given how everyone has seemingly said a permanent goodbye to him.

But it’s a side effect of this incredible rise up the Football League. Players who were previously key ones will be left behind, and this summer we might even see a few more big names like Mullin moved on.

Especially so if the transfers start to roll in. So far this summer Wrexham have signed Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward, with Wrexham completing a deal for Ward on Tuesday following his release at Leicester City.

Another name who’s now sealed his next move is Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson seals emotional transfer, six months after leaving Wrexham
Bodvarsson is someone who didn’t quite have the desired impact at the Racecourse. Wrexham signed Bodvarsson on a free transfer back in October but he failed to score in four League One games for Phil Parkinson’s side. In January, Bodvarsson joined Burton Albion on a free transfer.

And the 64-cap Icelandic international went on to fire the Brewers to League One safety. He scored five goals in 13 games for the club, but Burton Albion released Bodvarsson at the end of his short-term contract this summer.

Now, the 33-year-old has returned to Iceland with his hometown team Selfoss. Bodvarsson started his career with the club and now he’s back there, posting on X after the move was announced…

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s career stats so far are very impressive
Bodvarsson is a very useful type of striker: not only does he know where the back of the net is, but he’s always been a striker who can really effectively hold up play, and bring others into the game, whilst generally providing an outlet up top.

He’s done very well in teams that have struggled in their respective leagues, like with Burton Albion for example. Though at Wrexham it didn’t quite work out for the towering forward.

It’s clear that he’s enjoyed a strong career so far though and this next chapter could prove a lengthy one, as at 33 years old he could yet play for Selfoss for several years to come, and he certainly arrives at the club on the back of some good form in League One.

Meanwhile in Wales, Wrexham start on their pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand later in July, kicking off the pre-season with a game against Melbourne Victory on July 11th.
