3 mock trade packages to get Alex Bregman from the Red Sox to the Mariners..

Three approaches the Mariners could take to secure the star third baseman at this years trade deadline.

It is unclear if Alex Bregman is really on the trade block, but with speculation growing and the Boston Red Sox stuck in limbo, it feels like there is a chance. The team just traded Rafael Devers, and Bregman has an opt-out after this season. Would it be crazy for Boston to trade him? Perhaps, but if they do, the Seattle Mariners should pounce.

Jorge Polanco still has not played much defense this year, and Ben Williamson’s bat (.606 OPS) has left a lot to be desired. Thus, there is a natural fit for Bregman, who has posted a .938 OPS with Boston in 2025.

There are multiple ways the Mariners could pull off a trade of this magnitude. Let’s take a look at three approaches the Mariners could use to trade for the star infielder.

3 mock trade packages to land Alex Bregman with the Mariners
1. The prospect-heavy approach
In this approach, Seattle would trade Boston a package of prospects for Bregman, while keeping most of its big-league talent. This likely only gets accepted by Boston if the team is indeed punting on its 2025 season.

Mock trade proposal:
Mariners receive: Alex Bregman
Red Sox receive: Harry Ford (MLB No. 56), Ryan Sloan (MLB No. 83), Logan Evans (Mariners No. 10), Ben Williamson.

In this scenario, the Red Sox would receive two MLB Pipeline top-100 prospects in Ford and Sloan. It’s possible Boston would want three pitchers, but with Ford playing out of this world in Triple-A Tacoma, he would be an enticing trade chip.

Yes, the Red Sox have a solid young catcher already in Carlos Narváez. But having two good catchers is better than one, and Ford could also provide versatility in the outfiield. The Red Sox would also get Sloan and Evans, two of the Mariners top three pitching prospects. Evans has already had a taste of the big leagues, and looked good. Boston needs more pitching, both now and in the future.

They’d also get Williamson as a short-term replacement for Bregman in the infield.

2. The win-win now approach
In this approach, Boston and Seattle both make a move that will benefit their team now. With the Red Sox only three games back of the AL Wild Card (which is currently held by Seattle), they may want to trade Bregman but still imrprove their 2025 roster.

Mock trade proposal:
Mariners receive: Alex Bregman, Brennan Bernardino.Red Sox receive: Luis Castillo, Jorge Polanco, Tyler Locklear (Mariners No. 11 prospect).

In this case, Boston would get a No. 2 starter to anchor Garret Crochet in the rotation, which has struggled so far in 2025. This would also allow the Mariners to clear up the money it would take to keep Bregman around in the future, post-2025. Polanco would fill a role in the Red Sox lineup as a DH and third baseman, a role that was previously filled by Rafael Devers. He’s not Bregman, but his bat would soften the blow in Boston. Seattle would probably be able to manage without Polanco in this scenario by calling up Ford to split time at catcher and DH with Cal Raleigh.

Boston also gets Tyler Locklear, who is enjoying a strong season (.845 OPS, 10 home runs, 50 RBI) in Triple-A. Boston needs help at first base with Tristan Casas out for the season, and Locklear could provide production at the position if Abraham Toro cools off. The Mariners get Bernardino, a veteran reliever who would be an upgrade over Trent Thornton as the last guy in the bullpen.

3. The balanced approach
Finally, we have the balanced approach. In this scenario, the Mariners would give up a mixture of MLB talent and prospects.

Mock trade proposal:
Mariners receive: Alex Bregman
Red Sox receive: Luke Raley, Bryce Miller, Eduard Bazardo, Jonny Farmelo (MLB No. 66 prospect), Logan Evans (Mariners No. 10 prospect)

In this scenario, the Mariners trade two of their top-10 prospects, but hold onto their top six. They also give up three MLB players, but keep their top-end talent in place. If the Red Sox are interested, this might be the best offer for the Mariners.

However, the price remains steep. Raley is a club-controlled outfielder and first baseman who has hit well for three years now. He could fill multiple roles for Boston, and fits into their lineup right away. Miller is currently injured, but was electric last year with a 2.94 ERA. In Seattle, he’s probably the fifth starter. But in Boston, he could be their number two, and might have more value long-term than Castillo. Bazardo would fit into Boston’s bullpen as a high-leverage arm. He’s slowly become one of the Mariners’ top relievers, with a 2.84 ERA in 38 appearances. The 29-year-old started his career in Boston and would be a natural fit to return.

The Red Sox would also get Farmelo, the Mariners’ best center field prospect. Boston has plenty of young infielders, but could use more outfield prospects, and Farmelo would fit that mold. Meanwhile, Evans is an MLB-ready starter who performed well in his initial seven games with the Mariners.
