Newcastle United have their sights set on Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini to bolster Eddie Howe’s defensive ranks for what is set out to be a crucial campaign.
With both Premier League and Champions League football on the calendar, Newcastle are going to have to deal with the step up in competition on both fronts simultaneously. Reinforcements at the back had been sounded out as one area for improvement as far back as one year ago and interest in Scalvini has stood the test of time.
The 21-year-old Italian prospect is placed on a pedestal by Atalanta as a player to build their future upon, therefore they have a hard stance towards selling. However, the Magpies can hope the financial requirements involved are revealed so that they can strike an agreement.

There is less than two months of the summer transfer window to get things straight at St. James’ Park and an even shorter time frame before the new Premier League campaign begins.
Scalvini, still only 21, caused a huge scare for Atalanta on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign when tearing his left knee’s anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It kept him out of Euro 2024 and he returned to action five months later, in November of last year.
By any standard, that is a rapid recovery for the type of injury he incurred, but then in January he suffered a separate shoulder issue that kept him out for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign.
With such a record, the adjustment to the Premier League would be severe but according to the Northern Echo, the defender’s past has been fully considered when deciding that he is to be a top.
Should he sign, there is going to be a plan installed to help him past these recent troubles, toughen him up for playing in England and truly unlock the potential Atalanta have foreseen.

Fabrizio Romano, speaking on YouTube, has provided an update for the latest on Scalvini.
“English clubs already wanted Scalvini before the injury suffered a year ago. He has always been a very appreciated player in England.
“Several Premier League clubs remain attentive to the situation of Scalvini. We told you exclusively about Newcastle and Giorgio Scalvini is one of Newcastle’s priorities for the defence,” he explained.
“Newcastle are ready to make some important economic effort to sign Scalvini but we know dealing with Atalanta is never easy. The president, [Antonio] Percassi always maintains a point that it’s very hard when it comes to selling players of this level like Giorgio Scalvini.
