Edson Alvarez fired Mexico to CONCACAF Gold Cup glory in Houston. After Crystal Palace’s FA Cup winner Chris Richards crashed the USA into a fourth minute lead, an effort cancelled out by Fulham’s evergreen number nine Raul Jimenez later in the half, West Ham’s Mexican maestro headed home the winner deep into the second stanza.
A flying, diving header initially ruled out for offside. But one which sparked wild celebrations on the pitch and in the NRG Stadium stands after VAR intervened.
It remains to be seen which colour kit Edson Alvarez is wearing the next time he features in a competitive sense. The claret and blue of West Ham United – manager Graham Potter congratulated him upon his Gold Cup heroics during the start of pre-season training – or perhaps another shade and hue.

Despite talks with Tottenham Hotspur and interest from Chelsea, Mohammed Kudus was back at West Ham on Monday. So too was Lucas Paqueta; Hammers News understand that Manchester City remain interested in Paqueta but a return to Brazil looks unlikely as the playmaker awaits the verdict of his long-running spot-fixing trial.
Edson Alvarez is another whose future is shrouded in uncertainty.
For now, though, Potter is keen to focus solely on those currently available to him, while ensuring that Alvarez gets the time off he needs before potentially returning refreshed and revitalised.

“Aside from Edson Álvarez – who we congratulate after winning the Gold Cup with Mexico at the weekend – we’ve had the entire squad report back on Monday,” Potter tells the official West Ham website.
“[Having most of the first-team roster back] is a big positive and means that we can get some really good work in together from the word go.”

Edson Alvarez was linked with Bayern Munich towards the end of last season, alongside Monaco and long-time admirers Borussia Dortmund.
Monaco have since offered Paul Pogba a return to the professional game, however, while a move to the Allianz Arena feels unlikely as former Fulham enforcer Joao Palhinha commits his future to the Bundesliga champions.
Alvarez namedropped Chelsea when confirming his desire to stay in English football. West Ham’s London neighbours have shown an interest in the past. But, like with Bayern, this trail appears to have grown cold.
“I’m truly speechless,” Alvarez beamed after adding a third Gold Cup winners’ medal to those previous successes in 2019 and 2022. “I’m very happy because it was 35 days of training camp, during which you don’t see your family.
“But in the end, our desire was to win it, to make all the effort we put in worthwhile.
“We’re very happy, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground. There’s a lot to improve and work on, but what better way to do it than with a championship with our fans, against this opponent? Everything tastes so much better.
“I’d already had several goals disallowed, but I always thought I was in a good position [for my winner to count]. Obviously, they cut short the chance to score but, when they gave it, it was crazy. What better than a winning goal for the team?”
