Arsenal already have fix to Viktor Gyokeres problem they don’t even know exists yet..
Its been the criticism that has followed Mikel Arteta and Arsenal around for the best part of three years, but at long last, it looks as if the Gunners have landed themselves a striker. Viktor Gyokeres is being lined up as Arsenal’s latest big-money signing, with the Swede set to join from Portuguese outfit Sporting CP.
If the deal, as is expected, gets over the line, it could prove monumental for Arsenal in their search for a first Premier League title since 2004. In the eyes of many, adding a goal-hungry centre-forward was all Arsenal needed to finally end their drought and return to English football’s highest pedestal.
Now they appear to have landed one, it will be all eyes on the pitch to see if Gyokeres is the missing piece that many have touted him to be. But the good news for Arteta and Arsenal fans is that they already appear to have fixed a problem with Gyokeres that doesn’t yet exist.
It wasn’t that Kai Havertz was a particularly bad striker as such, moreover, he just lacked the cutting edge that Arsenal needed to compete for the biggest titles. The German proved himself more than useful at times and Arsenal certainly missed Havertz when he was sidelined through injury at the backend of last season.
The arrival of Gyokeres will no doubt eat into a chunk of Havertz’s minutes, but that doesn’t mean to say the 26-year-old won’t have a role to play for Arsenal. Instead, with Havertz, Arsenal might already have the perfect Gyokeres deputy in their ranks.
An injured Gyokeres isn’t a useful one for Arsenal, nor is a Gyokeres who doesn’t have any form of competition for his starting spot. And given the trust Arteta has previously placed in Havertz, it’s unlikely the former Chelsea star’s head will be allowed to drop too much following the arrival of Gyokeres.
There is a sense of now or never for Arteta at Arsenal, given the previous three seasons have ended with a silver medal. But whisper it, after the summer the north Londoners have had so far, they’ll fancy their chances of winning one of the big two next season.
