Erik ten Hag is Refusing to Let Granit Xhaka Join Premier League Club…

Bayer Leverkusen have undergone huge change this summer. The 2023/24 Bundesliga champions had to search for a new manager after Xabi Alonso left the club to join Real Madrid. Leverkusen eventually settled on ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

They have also lost a number of their key players. Florian Wirtz, one of the world’s best players, left the club to join Liverpool, as did hugely talented right wing-back Jeremie Frimpong. Jonathan Tah also left after 10 years with the club as he joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

Xhaka joined Leverkusen from Arsenal in 2023 as he signed a five-year deal. He has been integral to the club’s success over the past few years, playing 99 times and chipping in with six goals.

Now 32, the Swiss international wants to move back to the Premier League and has his heart set on joining newly-promoted Sunderland. His agent Jose Noguera exclusively told GIVEMESPORT:

“We have reached an agreement in principle with Sunderland on terms. Granit wishes to move back to the Premier League. It is an exciting new challenge for him. Now an agreement is needed with Leverkusen.

“Granit has enjoyed his time at Leverkusen, and we are very appreciative of everything the club has done for him. We hope Leverkusen can find an agreement with Sunderland and are sure talks will continue in an amicable manner due to the strong relationship between Granit and Leverkusen.

“Granit understands his importance to Leverkusen and although he wishes to join Sunderland, is fully respectful of Leverkusen.”

Ten Hag is unwilling to let another one of his key players leave this summer, though, and has blocked Xhaka’s move. He said, per the Mirror:

“His agent can say whatever he wants, but this club has already let three important players go, and we won’t let any more go. Granit is a leader, he still has three years left on his contract here. It’s clear – Granit is a key player, he signed here for five years and still has three years left on his contract. He’s too important to us to let him go.”

Leverkusen’s managing director Simon Rolfes added: “I have repeatedly said that Granit is an important leader. The coach and I agree on that. We are in dialogue with all our players. In the end, it’s always a three-party situation.

“Granit still has a three-year contract — and in principle, there can only be a change if all three sides agree to it. Topics like this always cause discussions and conversations. That’s why it doesn’t shock me.”

Sunderland have already spent more than £100million this summer, with Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra and Simon Adingra among the players they have signed.
