Vitor Pereira faces alarming problem after ‘special’ player leaves Molineux, Wolves could be in trouble

History threatens to repeat itself at Wolves in the transfer window, as too many players have left Molineux with not enough arriving.

Fosun are used to operating with a self-sustaining model, typically selling the club’s best players and using as little money as possible to replace them.

This summer, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha were the headline departures, and they’ve been followed out of Molineux by 10 other players of varying importance.

While the likes of Pablo Sarabia and captain Nelson Semedo will be missed, others such as Chiquinho, Chem Campbell, and Joe Hodge were never good enough to make the grade.

Unfortunately, continuously selling first-team stars will have huge consequences on their movement in the window, giving Vitor Pereira a glaring issue to tackle.

Vitor Pereira will struggle to sign a midfielder due to Andre and Joao Gomes

On Thursday, Boubacar Traore re-joined FC Metz on loan for the 2025/26 campaign, becoming the second midfielder to leave temporarily after Tommy Doyle was snapped up by Birmingham City.

Traore, who was once dubbed ‘special’, spent most of the 2024/25 campaign injured, with a loan seen as an opportunity to flourish in France, and hopefully, return to Wolves a better player.

Pereira never expected the Mali international to play a prominent role next season, but his exit has only highlighted the glaring need for depth in central midfield.

Currently, starting duo Joao Gomes and Andre are nailed on to start in the engine room, with only Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Marshall Munetsi as their backup options, the latter spending most of his time as part of the front three.

Wolves have been linked to several midfielders during the window, although the problem is finding someone willing to play as a second choice to Andre and Gomes, two players who are impossible to drop.

That being said, for all of their world-class quality, it is a huge mistake if Pereira enters the new season with just four midfielders available, presenting him a daunting challenge.

Which midfielders have Wolves been linked to this summer?

A new midfielder is one of four positions Wolves are prioritising, and throughout this summer, the Old Gold have been linked with several.

In May, it was reported that Wolves had shown an interest in Morten Frendrup, the defensive midfield powerhouse from Genoa.

Nothing materialised with Frendrup, and the same can be said for another target Johnny Cardoso, who joined Atletico Madrid instead.

Earlier in July, Lens’ all-action talent Andy Diouf was placed on Wolves’ radar, and they were joined in their interest by Crystal Palace.

Anyone who moves to the club this summer will, unfortunately, know that being selected ahead of Andre and Gomes is a thankless task, and that is why Doyle and Traore were loaned out.
