“Remember, Alvarez and Paquetá didn’t play – but yes.” The reply was interesting for revealing West Ham’s thinking about who is staying, as much as who might be coming in: the inference being that Alvarez and Paquetá will feature in the plans for next season.

Still means there’ll be departures: With Freddie Potts looking every inch a Premier League midfielder in-waiting, it seems both the Mexican and Brazilian may feature large in the Hammers’ plans for next season. Now that’s a midfield trio I’d be enthusiastic about watching compared with the Soucek – Rodriguez-Ward Prowse trio of turgidity that stepped out last weekend, although Alvarez has just returned from summer holiday so isn’t likely to start anytime soon.
