Not a lot has gone Newcastle United’s way in the transfer market so far this summer.

It has been a difficult transfer window, with various key targets passing Newcastle United by, much to the frustration of Eddie Howe.

Newcastle did sign Anthony Elanga, but he is the only new face to be added to the Magpies’ squad. It is a squad that is actually weaker, with Sean Longstaff joining Leeds United.

But Newcastle have tried to strengthen, and have been led to believe that deals were possible.

Hugo Ekitike is unveiled as a Liverpool player after joining from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Newcastle United not happy Hugo Ekitike information was leaked
That was seemingly the case with Hugo Ekitike, who almost became Newcastle’s most expensive signing. Instead, Ekitike has joined Liverpool for around £79million. Once the Reds stepped up their interest, a move to Anfield was the only outcome.

The move has been met with frustration on Tyneside, as Toon officials had felt confident about landing the Frenchman.

According to the Athletic, Newcastle United were frustrated that details of their pursuit of Ekitike were leaked into the public domain.

The Athletic add that Liverpool insist they did not hijack Newcastle’s move for the attacker, having made contact with the player’s camp in January. Arne Slot also spoke to Ekitike about joining the Reds earlier in the year.

Newcastle United seemingly continue to pursue a player they don’t really think will end up joining them in the form of Benjamin Sesko.

While Newcastle United cannot exactly give up in their attempts to sign Sesko, little about what they’ve done this summer will give supporters confidence that they can actually win a transfer battle.

For example, Manchester United are coming off their worst season in over 30 years but have still beaten Newcastle to the signings of both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

That is a bitter pill to swallow, particularly given Newcastle have Champions League football on offer.

Still, the misery of losing out to the Red Devils may be set to continue. Newcastle want to sign Sesko, but it may not be enough.

Newcastle United think Benjamin Sesko will join Manchester United
Man United are interested in Sesko too, while Arsenal have previously been linked with the RB Leipzig forward.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given all that’s happened during this summer’s transfer window, there has been a negative update from The Daily Mail.

They claim that while Newcastle are continuing to chase Sesko, those inside the club believe he will end up joining the Manchester club anyway.

Newcastle United are wasting time on Benjamin Sesko
Sesko has been impressed by Man United’s plans to sign him, and it’s all starting to look rather familiar for Newcastle.

The longer the saga drags on, supporters would be forgiven for thinking that Sesko to Newcastle is a lost cause. They’ve been burned before this summer, after all.

While it’s true that dropping out of the race now would make Newcastle look reasonably weak, they do not have time to waste.

They need to sign potentially two strikers if Alexander Isak leaves in a relatively short amount of time.

If they don’t seriously believe Sesko is going to join them, it’s time to switch the focus. They need reinforcements quickly.
