Alexander Isak is officially absent from Newcastle United’s Asian tour with a thigh injury, but given that a scan on his thigh revealed no issues, it seems more like a power play by the striker to force a summer move.
Liverpool have had their eyes on Isak for months, and the feeling is that as soon as Luis Diaz’s sale to Bayern Munich has gone through, the Premier League champions will launch a bid to buy Isak from Newcastle.
For his part, Isak has told Newcastle he wants to ‘explore a move away from the club’, which feels like a polite, unofficial transfer request.
What’s not so polite is feigning an injury to stay behind and force the move away from the club, which, if it doesn’t happen, is likely to cause a lot of problems behind the scenes.

Now, TBR Football are reporting that Alexander Isak has told Eddie Howe that he’s working on his own training programme at home, away from the Newcastle training ground.
While we understand this could just be so that Isak doesn’t have to face the possibility of being swamped by media or angry supporters at the training ground, it doesn’t exactly paint a good picture if it’s true.
Newcastle target Yoane Wissa has downed tools at Brentford to force a move to Tyneside, and now it’s starting to feel like Isak is ready to do the same at Newcastle.

One thing that Isak is doing by being so petulant is making it easier for the fans to let him go. Our recent poll results showed that a huge majority of our readers are ready to say goodbye to Isak, and if he is now training away from the club, then it doesn’t feel like there’s a way back for him.
Newcastle are adamant they want him to stay, but what’s that going to look like if the move to Liverpool doesn’t materialise? How will fans react when he steps out onto the pitch for the first time next season?
The whole saga has now turned far too ugly to fully recover from, regardless of what the end result is this summer. The sooner Newcastle get the deal done for Benjamin Sesko, the better, then if Isak does stay, at least we have another striker to pick up the slack when Isak is half-arsing it around the pitch.
