Report: Patrick Agyemang drawing interest from Derby County, Ipswich Town

The forward is likely to leave Charlotte FC this summer.

It looks like Patrick Ayemang could be headed across the pond this summer. According to a report by GiveMeSport’s Tom Bogert, the Charlotte FC forward is drawing interest from English clubs Derby County and Ipswich Town along with Belgian club Genk.

The 24-year-old from East Hartford has burst onto the international stage this year, earning his first call-up with the USMNT in January. He has 8 goals and 2 assists across all competitions for Charlotte FC and already has 5 goals in 9 caps for the USMNT. He is currently with the national team for the Gold Cup, where he scored the game-winner for the United States in their final group stage match against Haiti. He also logged another goal against Trinidad & Tobago off a deflected Diego Luna shot.

According to Bogert’s report, Charlotte FC rejected a Luton Town bid for Agyemang’s services earlier this year, but there has been a push from clubs as the summer transfer window opens. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano was first to report the interest from Derby County, but it appears several clubs have inquired about the potential to add Agyemang to their roster. None of the clubs have agreed on a transfer fee with Charlotte FC and Patrick Agyemang has not agreed to personal terms. However, it appears that Charlotte FC is preparing to lose the USMNT forward this summer to a club abroad.

Derby County close to landing new striker, as per Fabrizio Romano

Derby County are closing in on a move for Charlotte FC striker Patrick Agyemang, according to reporter Fabrizio Romano on X.

Derby County are working on a deal to sign the MLS hotshot this summer. DCFC are preparing for another year in the Championship.

Agyemang, 24, has been a key player for Charlotte FC over the past couple of years. He has scored 22 goals in 72 games in all competitions for Dean Smith’s side.

In this latest update regarding his situation by journalist Romano on X, he is wanted by the Rams and is in ‘talks’ over a transfer. John Eustace’s side stayed up on the final day of last season.

Derby County turned to Eustace back in February and their owner David Clowes told their website at the time: “I’m excited to welcome John back to Derby County. Fans will remember him for his craft, commitment and intelligence. He was a real leader. I’ve followed his managerial career with interest, and it’s clear he has the qualities we need to maintain our progress.

“He helped both Queens Park Rangers and Birmingham City avoid relegation, before taking Birmingham to sixth place prior to his departure. He has repeated that achievement at Blackburn Rovers, leaving behind a team in the play-off places.”

Derby County close on Patrick Agyemang deal

Derby County could see Agyemang as someone to boost their attacking ranks. DCFC are looking to snap up some targets over the next couple of months.

The USA international, who has made nine caps for his country to date, is a player with potential and someone who could improve down the line. He is quick, powerful and his place can cause problems for defenders.

Agyemang joined Charlotte FC back in 2023 and has since adapted well to life in the top tier of American soccer. He has proved he can score goals and has flourished under the guidance of ex-Walsall, Brentford and Aston Villa manager Dean Smith.

What now for Derby County?

Derby County were too close to the drop zone for comfort last term. DCFC will want to compete higher up the league next time around.

They have a talented head coach in the form of Eustace and he will want to put his own stamp on his squad in this window. He has managed Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers in the past.

Agyemang would be an exciting coup for the Rams and would give them more competition and depth up top. As with any player from abroad though, patience may be required while he adapts to life in a new country.
