Newcastle United suffered a blow to their summer transfer plans on Tuesday after their initial bid for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga was rejected.

According to reports, the Magpies lodged a bid of £45 million for the Sweden international, which was rejected outright by Forest with no counter.

Several outlets have been reporting for weeks that Forest don’t want to sell Elanga, but a bid of £60 million could persuade them into negotiations.

Clearly Newcastle were trying to get a better deal, but they’ve now learned that Forest are serious, but as to what happens next, we’re still not sure.

Newcastle have plenty of backup options if the Anthony Elanga move fails
Sky Sports are now reporting that Newcastle have three other right-wing targets in mind that they could move on to, with Johan Bakayoko of PSV still of interest, as is West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus.

They also claim that the Magpies are keen on Borussia Dortmund’s pacey winger Karim Adeyemi, who managed seven goals and six assists in 25 Bundesliga appearances last term.

However, Sky did go on to say that Newcastle are also deciding whether or not to go in with an increased bid for Anthony Elanga first before moving on to other targets.

Surely Newcastle won’t walk away after just one bid
Honestly, if Newcastle walk away from the Elanga deal after offering £15 million below the asking price and being annoyed that it was rejected, I don’t even know what we’re doing any more.

Any of the four players mentioned in this piece would be good additions to Newcastle’s squad, and we’re particularly intrigued by the addition of Adeyemi to the mix, but Elanga’s pre-existing relationship with Alexander Isak, having played together for Sweden, is just too good a selling point to ignore.

We’re sure that there’ll be another bid for Elanga before we move on, and hopefully, we do it quickly rather than wasting more time. There’s still plenty more shopping to be done.
