Merrill Kelly didn’t get much run support in his quality start for the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, but the Snakes didn’t give up despite being down the entire game. All-Star Ketel Marte made this game fun with his 9th inning All-Star heroics that tied the game up and sent this one to extra innings, but the D-backs ultimately fall short in 10. We have more on Ketel’s big night and his All-Star nod, Kelly’s outing, and the bullpen not giving this team a chance to win.
The Diamondbacks lose in 10 innings to the Giants.
Ketel Marte named All-Star starter once again.
PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Even after missing most of April, Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte has surged back into the spotlight and the starting lineup for the National League in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.
Marte was officially voted in as the NL’s starting second baseman for the Midsummer Classic, set to take place July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta. He earned a whopping 70% of fan votes in Phase 2 of the All-Star selection process the most of any player in either league.
This marks the second straight year Marte has been named an All-Star starter, and his third overall All-Star appearance. It also makes him the first Diamondback ever to be voted in by fans three separate times.
Marte missed most of April with an injury, but since returning on May 2, he’s been one of the most productive players in all of Major League Baseball. He’s hit 18 home runs so far this season — seven more than any other second baseman in the National League and his 2.8 WAR (wins above replacement) ranks fifth among all position players since his return.
The power surge, along with his usual consistency at the plate and in the field, has been a huge part of the D-backs’ push to stay competitive in the NL West.
Marte’s popularity continues to grow, not just in Arizona, but across the league. His performance in last year’s All-Star Game helped solidify his reputation as one of the game’s most electric second basemen and now he’s back to build on that momentum.
“For me, it’s incredible what I’ve been doing,” Marte said after learning he’d been voted in. “I never give up. I just work hard every day… I’m healthy right now, and I just want to thank everybody.”
His teammates also erupted in celebration after hearing the news in the clubhouse, a testament to how much Marte means to the franchise and how respected he is around the league.
