Alan Brazil delivers his honest verdict on Tottenham signing Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur are now closely monitoring Kobbie Mainoo’s contract situation at Manchester United.

TBR Football recently revealed that Tottenham were interested in Kobbie Mainoo, a midfielder who could definitely help Thomas Frank’s cause in N17.

Kobbie Mainoo made 37 appearances for Man United last season, but the 20-year-old is currently unable to agree a new deal at Old Trafford.

The England international has now been in contract talks with United for at least 12 months, and the two parties are yet to reach an amicable agreement.

Mainoo is under contract at Old Trafford until 2027, and the club has an option to extend his deal by a further year.

And whilst United might be in no rush to reach a conclusion, Brazil seemed quite intrigued by the idea of Mainoo playing for Spurs.

Brazil said: “He’s only young isn’t he, and if I were United I’d want to keep him, but it’s up to the manager.

“Amorim, he’s seen enough of him now to know if he’s his type of player, [or] not in his plans. Is he his type of player?

“I’ve always said that Tottenham’s midfield is not good enough, they need more pace in there, so the jury is out here.

“I’d like to see him stay at United, I’d like to see him get his career back on track, like playing every week and starting.

“But he could be alright for Spurs — that’s a good one that is. I’m not sure, I’m going to sit on the fence on this.”

Ruben Amorim previously offered no guarantees over Kobbie Mainoo’s contract saga

Speaking back in January, Amorim was asked about Mainoo’s contract situation ahead of facing Arsenal in the FA Cup.

And when speaking on the matter, Amorim didn’t seem in a position to offer any guarantees about Mainoo’s situation, even if he didn’t name the midfielder.

Responding to a question about the situation, Amorim said: “Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players we build for this club.

“But we know the position the club is in at the moment. We will see.”

A tense situation for United fans who would surely be very disappointed to watch such a brilliant young talent leave the club, were that ever to be the case.
