‘Outstanding’ player branded as a £607,000-a-week ‘failure’ but West Ham still want to sign him

West Ham United are working hard on new signings this summer.

The Hammers have already welcomed two new players in this window – Kyle Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf – while Jean-Clair Todibo’s loan deal has also been made permanent.

The focus now for Graham Potter is on reinforcements in his midfield, and his side have been linked with quite a few names.

Douglas Luiz is one of them, but his reputation has taken a hit in Italy.

West Ham target Douglas Luiz has been described as a £607,000-a-week ‘failure’

Luiz was among the most impressive midfielders when he was in the Premier League.

The Brazilian was ‘outstanding‘ for Aston Villa during his time there, and many in the game felt Juventus had snapped up a fine player last summer.

However, the 27-year-old played just 877 minutes of football for the Bianconeri last season, and it is clear that he has no future there.

After failing to show up for training, Fabrizio Romano revealed that the relationship between Juventus and Luiz is completely broken, and a move away this summer is likely.

Now, Gazzetta dello Sport have shared a breakdown of how much Luiz has cost Juve, considering his game time in the 2024/25 season.

The report claims that when you factor in his transfer fee and wages against his minutes, Luiz cost Juventus a whopping €21,000 (~£18,200) per minute or €700,000-a-week (~£607,000).

Gazzetta have further branded Luiz as a ‘failure’ and as ‘a player disconnected from the reality in which he finds himself’.

West Ham among clubs still keen to sign Douglas Luiz

Despite all the issues at Juventus, Luiz is not short of interest from the Premier League.

West Ham have been heavily linked with a move to sign Luiz and have even held talks with the Bianconeri about a loan deal.

TBR Football revealed that Everton, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur are all interested in Luiz as well, while Manchester United have also considered him.

It remains to be seen what will happen with Luiz, but Gazzetta’s description of the midfielder should act as a bit of concern to West Ham and other interested clubs.

Luiz was brilliant in the past in the Premier League, but whether he is still the same player is anyone’s guess after his disappointing time in Turin.
