Jayson Tatum Discusses Trying to Sign Damian Lillard:
‘When Someone Has Their Mind Made Up, You Have to Respect It’
This season, Jayson Tatum will not be able to play alongside Damian Lillard for the Boston Celtics. Despite expressing a desire to play with Lillard, the superstar point guard was eventually dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Tatum explained the failed recruitment attempt in an interview with Tougher and Rich on 98.5 The Sports Club on Tuesday.
“When someone has made up their mind, you have to respect it.” We spoke on FaceTime from time to time, so every now and then I’d remind him, “If you didn’t know, Boston is a great place.”

Lillard and his team made it plain that he wanted to play for the Miami Heat. That didn’t stop Tatum or other NBA stars from attempting to persuade Lillard. To win a championship, the Celtics will almost certainly have to go past Lillard and the Bucks in the Eastern Conference.
Despite missing out on Lillard, the Celtics swiftly strengthened their guard position. In response to the Lillard trade, the franchise acquired former Bucks guard Jrue Holiday. Although Holiday is not on the same level as Lillard, he still provides significant assistance to the Celtics at the position.
Tatum didn’t take Lillard’s refusal to join him in Boston personally.
“You can’t be everywhere if people want to go somewhere.”
Despite missing out on Lillard, the Celtics remain a playoff possibility. The squad has one of the league’s strongest starting lineups. Getting past Lillard and the Bucks, on the other hand, will be difficult.
The Celtics have kept knocking on the door of an NBA Championship. They’ll try to finish the job this year after signing Jaylen Brown to a long-term agreement.
